International Roundtable "Principles for Transboundary Multipurpose Water Management in the Sava River Basin

The Roundtable was held in Zagreb from 15 – 17 November 2006, as an activity within the "Petersberg Phase II / Athens Declaration" Process. It was organized jointly by the German Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, and the Sava Commission. The meeting was attended by more than 50 participants from ministries and other institutions of the Sava countries, as well as representatives of international organizations and financial institutions.

Two principal topics were considered at the Roundtable: the EU WFD as a basis for Transboundary Multipurpose Water Management (TMWM) in the Sava river basin, and the process of TMWM as seen from different perspectives, such as the water and ecosystem protection, flood prevention, navigation and hydropower generation. The Roundtable served as an opportunity, not only to transfer the EU experience on conflict management in TMWM to the stakeholders from the Sava river basin, but also for the stakeholders to discuss on how different interests can be balanced for an efficient management of water resources in the Sava river basin.
