2nd User Training within the Sava FFWS 2.0
In the scope of the project Technical Assistance for the improvement, extension and operationalization of flood and low flow forecasting and warning system in the Sava River basin, the second training was organized in Sarajevo from June 16-19, 2026.
The project, financed by the Global Environment Facility and the World Bank and coordinated by the International Sava River Basin Commission is part of the regional component of the Sava and Drina Rivers Corridors Integrated Development Program (SDIP) - Phase I, which aims to strengthen transboundary water cooperation and improve navigability and flood protection in the Sava River basin.
The training was attended by 38 participants from the 12 beneficiary organizations, i.e. existing Sava FFWS users and the inland navigation experts
from the Sava River Basin countries: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, and Montenegro, next to representatives from the International Sava River Basin Commission. Unlike Training 1, this second training was delivered entirely as a 4-day face-to-face event, with additional participants also joining remotely via Microsoft Teams.
Over four days, participants received a structured introduction to the latest system improvements reflecting the implementation stage reached at pre-release 0.2 and engaged in hands-on sessions covering operational data integration, AI/ML applications (Sava MLFC), low-flow forecasting and drought indicators, radar and flash flood forecasting, as well as hydrological and hydraulic modelling workflow updates (HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS and Wflow). As part of the training, participants also visited the Sava River Watershed Agency (AVP Sava), including a technical session on meteorological and hydrological monitoring, forecasting and warning practices in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and a group exercise on harmonizing transboundary warning procedures. The end-of-training evaluation confirmed a high level of participant satisfaction, with all respondents reporting that their expectations were met.
