14th Sava Youth Parliament: “Rivers Whisper: Do We Understand Them?”

The 14th Sava Youth Parliament was held on 9-10 October 2026 in Sremska Mitrovica, Serbia, under the theme “Rivers Whisper: Do We Understand Them?” The event brought together more than 40 young people from Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia.
The theme encouraged students to listen to what rivers tell us about their ecological condition, recognise pressures on aquatic ecosystems and consider how human activities affect water quality and biodiversity. Through their projects, young people were invited to explore these challenges and propose practical ways to protect and improve the Sava River Basin’s waters.
Nine participating teams presented their projects and proposed solutions to challenges affecting the Sava River Basin as follows:
The programme included also a guided visit to the Zasavica Special Nature Reserve, educational quizzes and hands-on water monitoring organised by the Siniša Stanković Institute.
Participants also learned about the Sava Youth Parliament and its links with the European Youth Parliament for Water. A new Presidency was elected: Nađa Uzelac (Serbia) as President, with Edna Smajić (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Toni Fabulić (Croatia) and Maks Sočič (Slovenia) as Vice-Presidents.
The Parliament adopted its declaration and endorsed the slogan “Rivers whisper, and we are ready to listen!” The new Presidency will help coordinate further awareness-raising activities and communication through the Parliament’s and the International Sava River Basin Commission’s online channels.
The event highlighted the importance of young people’s active involvement, environmental awareness and cooperation across borders in protecting the waters and ecosystems of the Sava River Basin.
