Final Working Conference on the Study on Sediment, Water and Biota in the Sava River Basin

On 22 September 2026, the Final Working Conference of the Study on Sediment, Water and Biota in the Sava River Basin was held in Zagreb, bringing together 36 participants from the Sava countries, both in person and online.
The Conference provided an opportunity to present and discuss the final draft deliverables of the Study, which strengthens the knowledge base needed for coordinated management of sediment, water and biota across the Sava River Basin.
The key deliverables presented included:
  • Report on the assessment of the sediment, water and biota system in the Sava River Basin, providing an assessment of the interrelationships between these components and the pressures affecting them;
  • Report on the database module structure and content, including recommendations for its future development;
  • Sediment simulation model, tested by appropriately trained experts from the Sava countries, together with the related technical documentation;
  • Report with recommendations for standardized monitoring and sampling of sediment, water and biota, including recommendations for alignment with the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive (WFD), where relevant;
  • Report analyzing the activities carried out under the Study, including recommendations on the steps required towards the preparation of an Integrated Sediment Management Plan.
Stakeholder input and next steps
The Conference also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to share their views and provide input on specific topics addressed by the Study. The discussion contributed to further clarification of the deliverables, while the activities and steps required for the finalization of the Study were agreed and communicated.
The Study represents an important step towards strengthening the shared knowledge base on sediment, water and biota in the Sava River Basin and supporting coordinated approaches to sustainable sediment management.
The results will contribute to the further development of knowledge, data exchange, monitoring and modelling capacities, as well as to future activities towards an Integrated Sediment Management Plan for the Sava River Basin.
