Study on Sediment, Water and Biota in the Sava River Basin - First Stakeholder Forum

The First Stakeholder Forum for the Study on Sediment, Water and Biota in the Sava River Basin was held on 20 November 2025 at Hotel Dubrovnik in Zagreb, Croatia. The event, organised by the International Sava River Basin Commission (ISRBC) with the Joint Venture consortium led by the Jaroslav Černi Water Institute together with the partners Gruner Stucky Ltd., Gruner Balkans L.L.C., and the Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković”, brought together over twenty onsite and around twenty online participants from all Sava River Basin countries.
The Forum opened with an overview of the Study’s objectives and a summary of completed activities. Key results from the First Interim Report were presented, including progress in sediment quantity monitoring and the monitoring of water, sediment and biota quality. Preliminary findings, field observations, and capacity-building efforts from the recent field campaign were highlighted, accompanied by a short promotional film of sampling activities.
Further presentations covered sediment characterisation, the delineation of Sediment Management Units, identification of sediment quality and quantity hotspots, and ongoing development of the sediment simulation model. The team also introduced work on a harmonised regional database to be integrated into the Sava GIS platform.
Interactive discussions enabled participants to share comments, raise technical questions and provide input on challenges, data needs and priority issues. In closing, the project team outlined next steps and the timeline for upcoming work, and the ISRBC Executive Secretary thanked participants for their contributions and stressed the importance of continued cooperation.
