Sava Youth Parliament 2016

As part of the celebration of this year's Day of the Sava, the Sava Commission on 3 and 4 June 2016 organized the "Youth Parliament 2016" - The fifth meeting of secondary school students Sava countries. The Youth Parliament was held in Lonjsko polje (Croatia) aiming to inform young people and to transfer of knowledge and exchange of experience in relation to the extraordinary ecological values and economic potential of the Sava River Basin.

The students from seven secondary schools form Croatia (VII.Gymnasium and Orthodox Gymnasium 'Kantakuzina Katarina Brankovic' from Zagreb), Bosnia and Herzegovina (JU Medical School of Bihac, Secondary School Ivan Goran Kovacic from Kiseljak and PI High school "Vaso Pelagić 'from Brčko) and Serbia (Caterer-Tourist school in Belgrade and Palanački gymnasium from Smederevska Palanka) attended the meeting. They, including a school form Slovenia, which unfortunately did not attend the event due to other obligations, were selected on the basis of results of the competition for the best interview entitled "Living with floods". The aim of the competition was that the young people with the interview on the topic showed the complexity of life with floods in the Sava River Basin and to encourage critical thinking about the floods, response to the flooding, concerning measures to prevent floods and minimizing their consequences.
Activities Youth Parliament in 2016 included:
  • visit to the Nature Park Lonjsko Polje;
  • election of the bodies Youth Parliament in accordance with the Statute;
  • presentation of selected interviews;
  • making the draft of the Youth Parliament activities for the following year
  • discussion on measures reducing flood impacts.
Sponsors of this year's meeting of young people were: UNDP in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Government of the United States and the headquarter of Coca-Cola HBC Croatia.
